Restoring and sharpening hand tools
Although not strictly guitar related, I do enjoy restoring antique hand tools. A lot of the tools that I use on a daily basis have been in my family for several generations, and I often get approached by people who have their grandfathers planes or chisels but don’t know what to do with them.
I am very happy to offer classes on how best to clean and sharpen antique tools for use, including topics like repairing damaged handles and indeed making replacement handles where the originals are beyond repair.
I will also cover subjects such as what to look for when buying antique planes and chisels, so that you can browse ebay or boot sales with confidence, as well as answering any questions you might have about hand tools in general.
With hand tools there is a lot to be said for the old adage ‘they don’t make ’em like they used to!’ – if you are looking to build a set of tools then knowing how to buy and restore old planes and chisels can save you a lot of money in the long run, without compromising on quality.
